How can I grow out my (short) hair to a medium length ?

I have always had very short spiky hair, however I recently decided I really want medium-length hair similar to this:

I've tried to grow it out before, but I always get this awkward phase where my hair is too long to spike or style but not long enough to look good.

Do I simply wear a hat until it grows out?

How long would it take? a year?

It would only take like 5 months to grow it out. Most guys hair does look kinda akward when they decide to grow it out, when it starts to get longer don't spike it! Just brush it down! lol, Good Luck and I def think you should do it cause that hair is soooooooo hawt! I 鈾?it!
